4 Alternative Ways To Enhance Your Wellness

Perhaps I am unique in this, but, in many ways, existence during the lockdown and the chaos caused by COVID-19 has led to an awakening in my soul about what it means to live a life that embodies wellness, happiness, and balance.

Trust me, I recognize the stress that comes when the dogs decide that the best place to fight is under my feet while I am trying to work. Or trying to keep track of my high school senior’s on line work, or those of you who’ve taken on a new role as “teacher” home school style.

Or, the worst, a trip out for necessities feels like an obstacle course around people who are not social distancing and not wearing masks. These practices benefit everyone’s health. If you do one thing for a healthier life, practice appropriate social distancing.

It is enough to make you want to hide in bed and drown your sorrows in a gallon of something decadent. And, let’s face it, many of us have succumbed to those unhealthy choices.

However, because of a desire to make changes in my life, I have been inspired to make different choices. There are many approaches to finding relief of stress and pain. Each one empowers us in a different way. True wellness comes from acknowledging that our bodies and spirits require nurturing in multiple ways. This includes: eating healthy foods, staying hydrated, exercising, and getting enough sleep. Embrace Forest Bathing

The Japanese term shinrin-yoku literally means “forest bathing.” It’s a practice of wellness that embraces being in nature. This is not about hiking or exercising to build up a sweat. It’s about breathing in the scent and power of the forest. Feeling the cool breezes on your skin. Dancing with the twinkling sunbeams and whispering with the shadows of the leaves. Listening to the chittering of hidden creatures and the conversational songs of birds. Smelling the spicy scent of pine needles, or the rich aromas of the earth.

Forest bathing is about being connected with all of your senses in a way that allows you to breathe more easily, and simply be. It empowers you to acknowledge, even for a moment, that life contains more than the stresses we carry with us on a daily basis.

Meditation

I only recently discovered how powerful meditation can be in bringing me back to balance, and now I can’t stop. I guess there are worse addictions to have. Of course, many people see meditation as that “woo woo” stuff of completely emptying your mind while saying strange mantras. It doesn’t have to be that.

Unless someone has been practicing meditation for years, it doesn’t seem possible to completely empty one’s mind of all thought. However, with practice, meditation provides the space to simply be in the moment, breathing deeply, and acknowledging your thoughts without judgment. We all could use a little less judgment in our lives, especially when our harshest critics are ourselves.

There are many different ways of approaching meditation, so it is easy to explore and find one that makes you comfortable. Some methods include mantras, readings from spiritual or religious texts, sound meditation, tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT), walking meditations, and yoga. Meditation can be guided, or you can simply sit quietly, and focus on your breath, allowing your thoughts to flow or not. Ultimately, just like any wellness technique, meditation requires practice, and a willingness to try something new.

The Power of Creativity

We all carry inside ourselves a magical tool that can help inspire wellness and enhance our existence-and that is the power of creativity. Many will deny this power. They will claim they aren’t good at drawing, painting, etc. But we don’t have to be good at something to be creative. All we have to do is let go and try.

Just like any muscle, our creative muscle benefits from being flexed, stretched, and trained. Reaching into that creative power allows us to let go of the restrictions of what is, and imagine what could be.

How does using creativity help with wellness? By dipping our toes into new ways of thinking, being, and doing it awakens in us the possibility of change. It frees us to see ourselves and our world differently. When losing ourselves in creative acts, whatever that might be, time flows in an unusual way, similar to meditation. Creativity allows us to simply enjoy being in the moment of the creative act.

Add any of these (or any others creative acts) to your life to help you find balance and wellness: dance, sing, paint, tell jokes, craft, write, play an instrument, sketch, build something, etc.

Daily Gratitudes and Brags

Sometimes it is hard to be grateful for what we have when everything feels chaotic and difficult. However, practicing daily gratitude and writing them down (at least 10) helps us recognize the good in our lives. If you are not feeling particularly grateful, look outside and be grateful for the beauty in the world. This helps with wellness because you are training your brain to look for the positive.

I also suggest that you learn to brag, (in writing) about yourself. This is about recognizing who you are as a person, and the value you bring to existence. We all have worth, but for some reason we tend to only see ourselves in the negative rather than the positive. Even though it can be difficult, writing 10 brags a day brings you one step closer to change. If you are stuck for a brag, try going meta: I am wonderful because I am writing these brags down.

And, Finally . . .

Don’t forget to laugh. Laughter is always the best medicine and our absolute favorite!

I’m sure we’ve heard the saying “use it or lose it”. This old adage is so important to maintain your mobility and strength, but it also helps to prevent injuries as well. Any weight-bearing form of exercise improves bone/joint strength which helps to prevent loss bone density which can lead to osteoporosis later in life. Just as your muscles will become stronger with exercise, your bones are living tissue too and will respond in the same way.

What are some of the simplest bone building exercises you can do?

  • Walking

Remember, exercise is only one aspect of maintaining healthy bones and joints. Diet plays a huge role and should include things such as calcium and vitamin D.  Foods such as vegetables, dairy products, eggs, and salmon are some good options to add to your diet. Maintain a healthy weight as added weight will place added pressure on joints causing pain and/or swelling. Limit or reduce the amount of alcohol you use. Avoid smoking. Be sure and follow up with your physician and discuss your bone health, whether or not a bone density test is needed and other supplemental medications if you have been diagnosed with low bone mass.

The last few months have been very stressful for all of us. We want you to take a moment to realize that there is only so much that we can actually control. So when life keeps throwing those curve balls, one of the healthiest things you can do is control your reaction to it. According to a recent poll done by the Kaiser Family Foundation in April 2020, 45% (almost half) of the U.S. adults that participated, reported that they were negatively impacted by the Covid 19 pandemic out of worry and fear over the virus. Many topics can arise out of this information such as the effect of anxiety and stress on mental health, risk for depression and/or substance abuse related to social isolation, effects on one’s self-esteem over loss of a job, or even the effects of an extreme burdon/stress over not being able to provide adequately for their family.

5 Simple Stress-busters to add to your routine:

Lately, many of us are feeling as though our tank is running on empty. Try these simple yet effective techniques to trasform your reaction into a healthier one:

Take a deep breath

Yes, you’ve heard it 1000 times but it helps. Stop, close your eyes and take a nice deep breath in through your nose while counting to 10 in your head. Slowly release your breath through pursed lips.

Exit Stage Right

Go for a brief walk. Even if it means walking away from your work. Believe it or not, a quick walk can help clear your mind almost immediately. It is more effective then you realize.

Jump in the Shower

This falls in line with the almost immediate effects that a walk has on your mind. Go jump in a hot shower. Adjust the shower head into a firm or massage like flow if you are able. Stand or sit and just let the water run over the back of your neck and shoulders with eyes closed. Don’t focus on your regular shower routine, use this time to let the water replenish your mind as you let go of the stress down the drain. Actually visualize your stress dripping away. Simple yet powerful.

Turn on your favorite music

Literally put on some headphones and blast your favorite playlist. Find that song that channels your inner bad-ass! That one song that comes on the radio and no matter how hard you try, you can’t help but bust a move or belt the lyrics out loud! Seriously, this is almost instantaneous relief! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve transformed into my alter ego when my favorite tune comes on!

Laugh out Loud

Take a few minutes to watch funny videos on social media or you can even google them from your phone. There are a ton of funny and very relatable memes out there right now that will actually have you laughing out loud. A good ole belly laugh is a total stress reliever. Especially if you can learn to laugh at yourself. We see you working your butt off, many from home while home schooling and trying to stay sane. You deserve to give yourself a break and try not to sweat the small stuff. 

 

How to control little things in your environment to keep stressors at a minimum:

 

1. Eliminate Clutter- Clutter clogs your mind. During stressful times, controlling little things in your environment will go a long way.

2. Wake up Early- Most people are more productive in the earlier hours of the day.

3. Make a list- If you have a lot of things hanging over your head, keeping a list can help you stay organized and minimize the amount of information that you are carrying on your shoulders.

4. Acknowledge and accept your challenges- Do not procrastinate. The longer you avoid your challenges, the heavier they become. Sometimes you can get backed into a corner, at which point you may become unable to get anything accomplished.

5. Drink plenty of water and have small nutritious snacks throughout the day- Often, we can get caught up in all the tasks of the day and forget to eat and drink. I’m sure you can relate to the instant aggressiveness that being “hangry” can cause.

Now more than ever is the perfect time to create new habits. Life as we knew it has very much changed and we have been faced with being forced to work from home, socially distance ourselves from friends and family, home school our kids, shop from home, and more. One thing we have focused on at Olani Organics is: How can we adapt to our new norm while staying focused, active, and healthy? Having so much time on our hands has allowed us to reflect, a lot, and focus on the little things we can do to support our immune system to stay well, continue to stay active during such a stagnant period, and most importantly….stay sane.

Whether you are stressed out trying to keep up with your kids online school assignments, missing your favorite yoga class or workout at the gym you can still create new ways to stay active and make the most out of your CBD routine. Staying active is vital to your good health both physically and mentally. Regular activity helps maintain muscle, bone, and heart health. Not to mention it helps boost dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels which will improve your mood, concentration, motivaton, and memory. You should also start a regular regime of CBD because it plays an important role here too. When absorbed by the body, cannabidiol binds with our own endocannabinoid system receptors and stimulates it to produce it’s own cannabinoids. The Endocannabinoid System can be a very therapeutic target to intervene with in many disease states because it ultimately is a body system regulator. Equally important to staying active, especially during “our new norm” is to create a regular routine. This is very important as most of us are trying to find a balance between work, school, exercise, and more, all within the confines of our homes. If you were a morning person before Covid 19 and were up, running, and out of the house by 7am, then you should continue to set your alarm, rise, shower, get the kids up, have breakfast, walk the dogs and begin the day as if you would before. It’s very easy to fall into a rut and lose our productive focus since becoming remote human beings. So, we all may have slacked a little bit at first, but now is a perfect time to regain your sense of self and purpose for everyone’s sanity! If you didn’t have to start your day at the crack of dawn, you should still try to wake up around the same time as before and begin your routine as previously. Either way, a regular routine helps to decrease stress levels and improves mental well-being.

Get or stay active; but on a regular basis. There are so many apps available for work-out at home routines as well as fitness programs On Demand. Create a small at home gym area in the basement or even in the yard now that the warm weather is here. For those that didn’t have an actual “work-out” routine, try and walk everyday even if it’s a short walk. Just get moving and stay moving at least 3x/week to boost the health of your cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Walking can help with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint and muscle pain or stiffness, and diseases such as diabetes and many others.

Eating well and drinking plenty of water will provide you with energy and hydration that is needed to stay active throughout your entire day. Proper nutrition provides fuel for the body to stay strong, fight off illnesses, boost your immune system, aids in weight loss, reduces your cancer risk, helps to manage diseases like diabetes, osteoarthritis/osteoporosis, heart disease, auto-immune disorders, helps to prevent stroke, heart attacks and much more. It’s easy to fall into bad habits with so much time on our hands, so stay focused on simple self-care techniques that you can implement now.

Maintain a regular bedtime. Simply getting 7-8hr of sleep per night can boost your immune system and improve your outcomes if you are currently fighting off a virus. Lack of sleep weakens your immune system and if you are not getting adequate hours of sleep each night you can consider yourself already immunocompromised.

5 ways to help you fall asleep:

  1. Create a cool, dark environment (sleeping in a cooler environment will help you fall and stay asleep).
  2. Limit screen time at night (turn off cell phones and computers at least 2 hr before bed).
  3. Minimize stress levels
  4. Maintain a regular daily routine
  5. Minimize naps

Practicing gratitude is a great way to boost your health and well-being. Berkeley.edu has worked on research about grattitude over the past 15 years. “Preliminary studies suggests that grateful people may have better sleep, healthier hearts, and fewer aches and pains”, in an article they wrote: “Is Gratitide Good for Your Health?“. Being thankful also helps to decrease stress and ensure a sense of calm and well-being. Gratitude can also help to improve relationships and lord knows that all of us have encountered our share of togetherness during quarantine! Some simple ways to implement gratitide are:

  1. Say thank-you
  2. Write a thank-you note
  3. Keep a gratitude jounal
  4. Take advantage of our time of solitude and notice the little things in nature that you may have been too busy to notice before
  5. Pray
  6. Meditate
  7. Count your blessings

So How Can You Easily Incorporate CBD into Your Routine?

We are so glad you asked. First, I bet you didn’t realize that you could utilize and benefit from CBD in the following ways:

Consistency is key and when taking CBD it is one of the most important things to remember. Keep in mind that everyone’s routine can be tailored specifically to your own needs and finding that sweet spot is what you will need to figure out. We start off every morning with a nutritious light breakfast as CBD is much better absorbed by the body when taken just after a meal. Some eggs, yogurt, fruit and a nice cup of Java will do you good. Keep in mind, CBD should not be taken with your prescribed medications and it’s best to space those out using a 2hr window before or after consuming CBD. The theory behind this is that CBD acts similar to the way that grapefruit does and could have an impact on how your body absorbs prescribed medications. This is why your physician or pharmacist may advise you not to take certain medications with grapefruit. It’s always better to err on the side of caution and space out any type of CBD or other over the counter vitamins or supplements from your prescription ones and never to take any medication with grapefruit or grapefruit juice. After breakfast we take 2 25mg Everyday Formula Natural Softgels.

Depending on plans for the day, we generally will have 1 or 2 CBD Oil Gummies after lunch if we are planning to increase our activity or need to focus on a particular work task, or even if the day is becoming stressful from all of our increased activities at home with the kids, dogs, and work deadlines. At least twice a week we try to focus on a “spa at home evening” to pamper ourselves since most of us have been missing these luxury treatments over the last 4 months. It is so important that we take some “me” time and really try and unwind. We feel that little pleasures mean so much more at this moment and this is how we indulge. Be Proactive: 6 reminders that can help

Eat and Sleep Well

Remember to eat well balanced meals. If it hasn’t already been a part of your routine, focus on it now more than ever. Fruits, veggies, greens, you know the drill. Some foods will actually help boost your immune system. Although alcohol may help with feelings of anxiety in the moment, it is a depressant and can actually interfere with rem sleep which is vital in order to obtain true restoration during sleep. Get 7-8 hours of sleep/night. You can take all of the vitamins and supplements in the world, but if you are sleep-deprived, your immune system is already compromised.

Acknowledge Negative Emotions

Fear, anxiety, depression are all normal human reactions that a person may have in response to a situation such as this. Accept those feelings and do not avoid or depress them. Talk about them, chances are you are not alone. This has taken all of us by storm, but we must keep it in perspective in order to stay safe, healthy, and all do our part to decrease the risk of its spread. If we are paralyzed by fears and anxiety, it diminishes our capabilities of taking appropriate action for ourselves and our families.

Get Physical

Let’s face it…the first week or so, some of us enjoyed the down time (maybe some more than others) But, get up, get out for a walk, or check out a virtual yoga or exercise class! They are popping up all over the internet. Check them out and search for a place near you. Either way, staying mobile is important for lung health, heart health, and mental health.

Devise a New Routine

Now is the perfect time to create new routines. Pretty much all of us are now working from home or at home. Use this time therapeutically. Creating a new morning, afternoon, or evening routine can boost emotions, help us to feel more productive, and can even promote a sense of organization and well-being.

Pamper your skin

With all of the hand washing and sanitizer use, don’t forget to nurture your hands. Keep moisturizer near your sinks and moisturize your hands after each wash. Don’t forget to keep nails short (tons of germs can get under your nails) and make a conscious effort to be aware of what you touch with your hands. We tend to touch our face with our hands over 100 times/day!

Maintain Social Relationships

Social distancing is a MUST. But that doesn’t mean that you have to isolate yourself in your home. Phone a friend, use Facet Time, or better yet, have a zoom date with friends or family to chat or have a virtual party together! Be creative, but stay connected with friends & family, it’s vital for our mental well-being.

During Covid-19, millions of Americans will need to turn to food banks for support due to disruption of jobs, schools, etc. You can help by donating to  Feeding America at Donate To The Covid-19 Response Fund 

Donate Funds

Everyone can support The World Health Organization (WHO) directly to assist in their COVID-SOLIDARITY RESPONSE FUND FOR WHO for critical response efforts in countries most in need of help through April 2020. Volunteer

Many chapters are looking for healthy volunteers who can be on call to make deliveries for Meals on Wheels to seniors who rely on them for a hot meal everyday. Our elders are especially at risk and some could become very isolated at home.

No Kid Hungry

Schools have been shut down due to Corona Virus and many kids and families who depended on school meals throughout the day are in need. No Kid Hungry uses donations for emergency grants to give to community groups and local food banks. Not everyone can afford to serve 3 hot meals/day without an income. Donate Here

For Pets

The MSPCA is accepting donations of dog and cat food to donate to those people who are financially struggling to ensure that their pets are fed and remain healthy as well.

The Endocannabinoid System

The Endocannabinoid System connects to all of the body’s organs and other systems and helps to maintain homeostasis.  It has played a role in many disease states, regulatory functions, and also plays a role in our immune system.  It helps to decrease inflammation with chronic inflammatory conditions and also helps to regulate homeostasis in the gut related to anxiety, migraines, and more.  The ECS actually has its own receptors that interact directly with cannabinoids such as CBD and THC. Exercise: Try a brisk 20 minute walk each day or evening.

Foods: Citrus fruits, Red bell peppers, Broccoli, Garlic, Ginger, Spinach, Yogurt, Almonds, Cashews, oily fish, (decrease refined sugar intake).

Sleep: We can’t stress enough, a minimum of 7-8hr/night to boost your immune system.

De-Stress: Keep stress to a minimum. Chronic stress elevates cortisol levels which if remain constantly high, can actually block the immune system from doing its job fighting off infection. Stay healthy, stay well, stay strong, and stay positive. Positive energy, thoughts, and feelings have positive effects on our mental health and well-being.
